Vesperian

Rare Tiny Fey Vesperian

These rare, fox-like fey are enigmatic tricksters who have adapted to galactic life with mischievous glee. Known for their sharp minds, innate magical talent, and a deep-seated love for clever plots and dazzling novelties, their myths and legends are found in cultures throughout the Core Worlds.

Originally from the chaotic realm of the Wild, Vesperians emerged into Reality as mischievous fey across the galaxy. Their forms have always been vulpine in nature, though their specific appearance often adapts to the environment they inhabit. They are known by many names; the elves call them

kitsune, on Riadus they were known simply as “fox spirits”, the brutish Kraal refer to them as “Vulpaxian Tricksters,” and others know them by names like “star-tails.” Vesperians are a charismatic and witty people with a connection to the primal forces of the universe that grants them many magical abilities. Having mostly abandoned their reliance on shapeshifting for survival, they now revel in living openly among other ancestries, often in their natural, multi-tailed fox form. They possess remarkable manual dexterity in their forepaws, allowing them to operate technology with the same ease as any other species. While they find technology fascinating, especially as a novelty, most Vesperians rely on their innate fey magic for day-to-day life. Their reputation as clever observers and tricksters precedes them.

Physical Description

In their true form, all Vesperians resemble multi-tailed foxes. Standing between one and two feet tall and weighing 5 to 15 pounds, they move with a fluid grace that belies their fey origins. The appearance of a Vesperian can vary wildly depending on what corner of space they hail from; while many resemble the classic reddish-orange foxes of Riadus, others may possess fur of vibrant purple, deep blue, or starless black. Some might have long, flowing coats, while others have no fur at all, their skin shimmering with a faint, internal light. Despite these variations, their vulpine shape remains a constant. Their forepaws are naturally dexterous, granting them the ability to manipulate tools, type on datapads, or carefully disarm a trap. All Vesperians have at least two tails, with more growing as their personal power and mastery over magic increases, to a maximum of nine.

Society

As Vesperians are so rare, they possess little in the way of a centralized society, instead integrating into the diverse communities they inhabit. This external perspective allows them to notice subtle social cues others might miss, making them quick to offer help or a kind word. Because of this, Vesperians often form strong interpersonal relationships and become anchors within their social circles. When two Vesperians do meet, they often engage in a lighthearted battle of wits, seeing it as a delightful sport to try and outwit one another. A few secluded Vesperian enclaves exist in remote corners of the galaxy, though these groups rarely interact with outsiders.

Language

Vesperians speak a language called Vespen, which is a dialect of Sylvan adapted for a technological galaxy. It is a language of quick, sharp sounds, layered with double meanings, innuendo, and hidden jokes. To a non-native speaker, a conversation in Vespen can sound like a series of playful yips and chirps, but for the Vesperians, it is a rich and expressive form of communication.

Names

Vesperian names often evoke cosmic beauty or natural phenomena observed from the viewport of a starship, reflecting their wonder at the vastness of the galaxy.

Example Names: Brightstar, Comet-tail, Driftcloud, Nebulheart, Quasarsong, Rainshadow, Stillnova, Voidwhisper.

Beliefs

Vesperians often possess a neutral perspective on the universe, balancing their innate mischievousness with a genuine curiosity about others. While some can manipulate the minds of others, it is considered a grave offense to use this magic for selfish gain. Most Vesperians don’t worship deities in a traditional sense but show great respect for the cosmic forces of creation, freedom, and fate. When living among other species, they may adopt local religions with honest sincerity or simply go through the motions to better understand their neighbors.

Popular Edicts: use cunning and trickery to improve the lives of others, respect the freedom of all thinking beings, seek out new experiences.

Popular Anathema: use a lie or other deception for purely selfish personal gain, be needlessly cruel, betray the trust of a friend.
